The Bull Ring – A Play by Brian Mcloughlin
Synopsis of the Play: The Bull Ring
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a lady advancing well past the age of thirty years and in a relationship with a gentleman for years is pining for the gentleman to propose marriage to her. And when Ann suddenly receives the proposal of marriage from Bernie, a farmer with many acres and having a prize bull, she surely anticipates the engagement ring would devour every last bit of the prize bull, for is not Ann the real prize and not the prize bull. However, under the thrall of a dazzling poetic proposal, Ann, in saying yes to a quickened wedding, also says yes to forfeiting the engagement ring, for she has fallen in love with the poetry. And on discovering the beloved rhymes were not composed by Bernie as he claimed, but rather by a dishevelled poet on Bernie’s behalf, Ann, having fallen for the poetry, falls for the poet.
Set in Ireland in the 80s in the era of heightened artistic and musical expression, the play, a comedy, follows Ann’s trajectory from doormat to material girl to wild girl and beyond, and the mayhem that causes around her.
